SSP After-School Choirs: St Ambrose

Choral Director David Wynn-Evans writes about the foundation of after-school choirs across the Diocese as a part of the Schools Singing Programme.

St Ambrose Children’s Choir in Chorlton was set up in September 2023, as an extension of our Schools Singing Programme.

We rehearse weekly in the parish church of St Ambrose, giving pupils a chance to sing together outside of the school day, as well as the regular opportunity to sing in a larger space than the classroom or school hall.

This in turn brings music into the parish, and as our group develops in confidence we are looking towards working on repertoire that could be included in a Family Mass, which could be an exciting future opportunity for the choir.

We sing a selection of both sacred and secular music, alongside warm-ups and musical games, which help the children to develop their singing technique, as well as learning to sing in harmony. Current repertoire highlights include Bob Chilcott’s Irish Blessing and Mike Anderson’s Gloria.

When I was younger I started singing, and dropped it at the age of 8. Then I came here and you’ve literally encouraged me to do so much more.

Pupils also expressed their enjoyment of singing with pupils from different year groups; the choir is open to all of Key Stage 2. Members of the choir become confident singers, meaning they act as leaders in Hymn Practice and School Masses, in turn inspiring others to find their voice and sing more confidently.

Alongside the after-school choir, I lead weekly sessions with Year 3 and Year 5 in St Ambrose RC Primary School, and have also accompanied Key Stage 2 in Hymn Practice, and the Christingle Service. My hope is that over time, the choir will positively impact the singing culture throughout both the parish, and the school, as well as helping pupils explore their faith through sacred music.

‘I get to sing twice a week – it makes me feel elated.’
‘I can share my talent.’

Year 3 Pupils

The highlight of the first term was taking part in a Carol Service as part of the Schools Singing Programme. There were five across the diocese, with pupils singing alongside the Cathedral Choirs. Watch a video of children at our Carol Services singing David Waggoner’s, ‘Child of Peace’. Alongside this, the children helped lead the congregational carols.
